Comedian-director Roberto
Benigni announced Monday he was returning to film after nearly a
decade spent away from cinema.
Benigni was speaking at a press conference for his next
blockbuster TV appearance, on the Ten Commandments, on December
15-16.
Benigni's last film, The Tiger and the Snow - about an
Italian, love-struck poet caught in Iraq during the US invasion
- was released in 2005.
Before that Benigni directed Pinocchio in 2002 and Life is
Beautiful in 1997. The latter won three Academy Awards,
including best foreign film.
"Television and film are mediums that are very very distant
(from each other), even if the new television series have a
completely new style created by great directors, which allow the
whole technical and artistic cast to express themselves at their
best. Cinema has the gift of synthesis, the golden rule to stay
within two hours, to which I am very attached".
